The United Kingdom (UK) on Friday issued a statement calling upon all political players to work together for the good of the country.

In a statement issued after meeting Opposition leader Raila Odinga, the Minister for Africa, Rory Stewart, expressed the government's regrets with the former Prime Minister's withdrawal from the Presidential race.

"I emphasised my regret to [Raila] over his decision to withdraw from elections...and urged the former Prime Minister to work with others to ensure democratic elections happen as per the Constitution," Mr Stewart stated.

Mr Stewart also met Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Monica Juma in a separate meeting where they discussed details of the upcoming repeat election.

The Minister for Africa Affairs affirmed that his government supports a free, fair and peaceful election in Kenya.

"UK is a strong supporter of Kenya's constitution and institutions. It is important for all Kenyans that elections take place in line with the Supreme Court decision of September 1," Stewart noted.

The British government has raised concerns about the rush to amend election laws just few days to the repeat presidential election set for October 26.

According to Mr Stewart, the rushed legislative changes are adding to the tension in the country.

Mr Odinga travelled to the UK on Wednesday night to deliver a lecture at Chatham House.
