500 Suspected Mungiki Take Oath in Nairobi

There were chaos in Nairobi's Lucky Summer area on Sunday after residents of the area disrupted a prayer meeting claiming it was an oath-taking ceremony for members of the outlawed Mungiki-sect.

Led by Ruaraka Member of Parliament TJ Kajwang, the group of youth forced the men to scatter and police had to intervene as the two-factions pelted each other with stones.

According to Kajwang, the said meeting had attracted around 500 men who made blood sacrifices.

The legislator further alleged that some of his supporters were stabbed several times during the ensuing melee, casting doubt over the kind of prayers the group was having.

One resident of the area also expressed fear that the group might be an outlawed sect as some had crude weapons and sported dreadlocks.

"We cannot allow this. Which church does not have kids and women among its congregants?" asked the resident.

Kajwang also stated that two people had been shot by police during the fracas and one had a bullet lodged in his stomach.

The chaos led to disruption of transport in the area for a while before police finally got the situation under control.

As the country gears up for the Presidential election slated for October 26, there have been fears that some leaders want to instigate violence by using outlawed groups.

Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinett has quashed those claims stating that police are on the lookout for any fishy activity that can threaten security during the election period.
