IEBC's Plan to Postpone Election in NASA Stronghold Rejected

A group of  National Super Alliance (NASA) leaders has rejected an alleged plan by the IEBC to postpone the election in their strongholds.

According to the Opposition Members of Parliament, IEBC should not postpone the election in some regions because the move could further compromise the poll.

Speaking to the Nation, ODM chairman John Mbadi, Amani National Congress (ANC) Secretary General Barrack Muluka, MPs Opiyo Wandayi and Otiende Amollo, explained that a move to re-schedule the election in some regions would only increase the illegitimacy levels.

According to the NASA leaders, the election would not be legitimate and valid unless all 290 constituencies take part.

“The IEBC messed up this process the moment they refused to undertake reforms immediately the Supreme Court nullified the elections. No level of game-meandering will help,” Mbadi stated.

Mr Muluka, on his part, called on the Commission to cancel the Thursday election and conduct a new process.

“The only move that can lead to a legitimate process is to call off the exercise. Even Chebukati himself has admitted that he cannot guarantee a credible election as things stand,” he stated.

Lawyer Amollo reaffirmed the coalition's position that no decision by IEBC would legitimise the process, other than a postponement of the polls.

The leaders made the remarks following an alleged plan by the Commission to postpone the election in some regions over claims of unsafety.

According to the Nation, Mr Chebukati pointed at using the powers given to him under Section 55 of the Elections Act, where he can push forward polls in any region over insecurity.
