Raila's Election Day Plan Lands Him in Court

Opposition leader Raila Odinga was on Tuesday afternoon taken to Court over plans by the National Super Alliance (NASA) to have demonstrations on the election date.

Businessman Raju Bhagat Singh filed a case at the  High Court seeking to stop Mr Odinga and NASA from calling on Kenyans to boycott the repeat poll and stage demos on Thursday.

According to Mr Raju, his democratic right as a Kenyan citizen to participate in the election slated for October 26th is under serious threat as a result of the former Prime Minister's actions.

The case was filed following the NASA leader's last week remark where he announced that he would call for the 'mother of all demonstrations' on election day in protest of the fresh presidential poll.

Mr Odinga, however, denied calling for any demonstration adding that Kenyans should boycott the election and stay at home.

Speaking at an interview with BBC, he stated that he had only asked his supporters not to participate in the polls.

"We have not told people to demonstrate on polling day. We have not said that at all. We have told people to stay away.

"You see, there are two forces here, those who want to go on with the sham elections irrespective of the consequences and those who say it is not right to do so.

"Picketing, striking and peaceful demonstrations are guaranteed by our Constitution," he stated.

The Opposition leader and his team have been holding demonstrations against the electoral commission with the hope of forcing key reforms.
