Government Bans 2 Groups Preparing to File Presidential Petition

The NGO Co-ordination Board, which is under the Ministry of Interior and Co-ordination of National government, has banned two groups that sought to file a petition challenging the outcome of the October 26 fresh election.

The groups; Kura Yangu Sauti Yangu and We The People were banned on Monday afternoon for illegal operations.

In a letter seen by Kenyans.co.ke, it is also alleged that the two groups have illegal accounts with NIC Bank and Citi Bank.

An official who spoke to us confirmed the same noting that the letter was authentic and the board was still conducting investigations.

"Both Kura Yangu Sauti Yangu and We The People have subsequently opened and are operating illegal accounts with both NIC Bank and Citi Bank in contravention of section (12) 4 of the Act, regulation 13 read together with clause 10 of terms and conditions attached to the registration," read the letter in part.

It is further alleged that a transfer of Sh36 Million was made to the two groups from the George Soros Foundation for purposes of funding political operations in Kenya.

The NGOs board also stated that the mentioned entities had employed foreigners contrary to provisions of the Kenyan Citizenship and Immigration Act 2012.

We-the-People, a lobby group that styles itself as a citizens’ alliance was expected to file a petition challenging the validity of the October 26 presidential poll today (Monday).

The group argued that the election was not credible and created a lot of uncertainty.

“Rather than using the historic Supreme Court judgment to reform and raise electoral standards, the five-year cycle of electoral instability has been further entrenched.

"This is horribly costly in ways the nation cannot afford and continues to create uncertainty and fear,” the group says in one of the pleadings to be filed in court on Monday.
