Mudavadi Reveals How US Influenced IEBC 5 Days to Election

National Super Alliance (NASA) co-principal Musalia Mudavadi has accused foreign envoys from the United States and the United Kingdom of interfering with the October 26 election.

In an affidavit submitted to the Supreme Court, Mudavadi claims that a statement issued by the two nations on October 20 gave the IEBC new impetus to conduct the poll, disregarding the issues the Opposition had raised.

The NASA leader accused US Ambassador Robert Godec and UK High Commissioner Nic Hailey of showing bias by acting in support of the electoral body.

"On many occasions, they acted as the public relations officers for Mr Wafula Chebukati and the IEBC," his affidavit read in part.

Illustrating his point, Mr Mudavadi claimed that the envoys issued their endorsement for the fresh poll despite Chebukati's statement on October 18 that expressed doubt over the credibility of the October 26 poll.

Opposition Chief Raila Odinga expressed similar sentiments while on his trip to the US stating that Mr Chebukati had often times accused the envoys of exerting undue pressure on him.

"He was frustrated with the envoys in Nairobi and asserted that they had sometimes contributed to the crisis," Mr Odinga observed.

Ford-Kenya deputy party leader Bonny Khalwale has asserted that it is due to these circumstances that the Opposition has chosen direct engagement with the international community through Mr Odinga's trips abroad.

"We are just re-affirming the fact that either those western envoys do not understand what is going on or have deliberately decided to take sides, irrespective of the truth," Dr Khalwale stated on Monday.

Former Machakos Senator Johnstone Muthama added that even when the envoys seemed to support the former Prime Minister, they were secretly backing President Uhuru Kenyatta.

"Raila is being blocked because of the independence of his mind, because he cannot be controlled by any foreign power," Muthama stated.
