Kenya's Trending Topics on 17th November 2017

National Super Alliance (NASA) leader Raila Odinga's much anticipated return to the country elicited mixed reactions from Kenyans online.

Under the hashtag #RailaReturns, Kenyans expressed their joy while others were not quite happy with the protests that had erupted in Nairobi following the Opposition leader's arrival.

Here are some of the reactions:

The former Prime Minister arrived at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) at around 11:20 am.

A user estimated that 1.2 Million people were escorting Mr Odinga from the Airport into the City Centre.

On the contrary, another user wrote: "We were enjoying peace and calmness when the lord of poverty was out of the country, he is back, hide your property it will be destroyed and some looted, back to demos and stone throwing."

JKIA

Police were on Friday morning forced to lob teargas to disperse a section of National Super Alliance (NASA) supporters who had started marching towards the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

The supporters reportedly blocked roads and lit bonfires making it difficult for vehicles to use Mombasa Highway.

Police moved in and dispersed the crowd from the roads.

#CoopLipaNaMpesa

The hashtag was trending after Co-operative Bank launched a new service where Lipa Na M-Pesa merchants can now link their till numbers to their bank accounts.

A huge benefit of this feature is that a merchant can get a business loan from their turnover.

Moreover, the payments made via Lipa na M-Pesa go into the Co-op bank account at no Extra Cost.

Kenyatta University

The University trended after the announcement that it would be closed indefinitely following the ongoing lecturers' strike.

In a memo to all students dated 16th November 2017, the acting Vice Chancellor, Paul Wainaina, explained that the strike had affected the institution greatly forcing them to shut down.

He also mentioned that heightened tension and agitation among the students left the University Senate with no other option other than suspending the institution's operations.

“Following the continuous nationwide lecturers' strike that has adversely affected academic and heightened agitation among students, the University Senate has decided to close down the university until further notice,” the VC’s memo read in part.

CUEA & #JKUAT30thGrad

Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology and the Catholic University of Eastern Africa were having their graduation ceremonies on Friday and trended under their respective hashtags.
