MPs' Wealth to be Made Public - EACC Declares

Ethics and Anti-corruption Commission (EACC) Chairman, Eliud Wabukala, wants the wealth of Members of Parliament (MPs) and other civil servants made accessible to the public.

Speaking during a service at St Peters Anglican Church in Mombasa, he stated that the Commission would implement measures to avail such information to Kenyans.

“We will request to make it known to the citizens the declaration by the public servants. It should not just be something to stay professed and put in the archives,” Mr Wabukala told the worshippers.

According to Wabukala, creation of a platform that will allow voters access to the wealth of public servants will encourage accountability among them.

Wabukala urged various organizations across the country including religious groups to act as its watchdog at the grass-root levels.

He also encouraged the residents to maintain peace and tolerance irrespective of their ethnic backgrounds.

Earlier in the month, the EACC reminded all State and Public Officers to declare their income, assets and liabilities before the end of the year.

“The Commission further requires all persons elected or appointed to state or public office to make their initial declarations and those exiting public officers their final declarations,” Mr. Halakhe Waqo, the Commission’s Chief Executive Officer, stated while issuing a report in November.

Mr Waqo promised that the EACC will monitor the declaration exercise.

Failure to submit the declarations is a criminal offence according to the Constitution and makes one liable to a fine not exceeding Sh1 Million or a one-year imprisonment.
