Senior Court Officials Caught Red-handed Receiving Bribe

EACC detectives on Tuesday arrested two senior court officials in Nyeri county for allegedly soliciting a Sh25,000 bribe from a contender in a court case.

The anti-graft agency busted the two employees at Karatina law courts upon receiving the money at the court's premises.

EACC Regional Director Jackson Mue confirmed the incident adding that investigation into the bribery at the law courts has already been launched.

The Assistant Executive Officer and the Court Clerk were arrested at the court premises and later processed at EACC central office.

The two officials allegedly demanded the money to faciliate the release of the suspect who was arrested and charged with offences of breaking and stealing.

He further noted that an additional Sh 47,000 was recovered from the Court Clerk who claimed the money belonged to the second suspect. 

Mue revealed that the amount which was concealed in a handbag was recovered from the executive’s table drawer in her office.

“They were booked at Nyeri Central Police Station where they were released on cash bail of Sh 50,000 each and are set to appear in Courts upon completion of the investigation," he conveyed.

He noted that the officials would be charged with various offences and engaging in corruption by demanding and receiving bribes from members of the public seeking services at the law court.
