Uhuru Addresses Secession Talk During 2017 Jamhuri Day

President Uhuru Kenyatta has stated that he will not allow the country to be subdivided, insisting Kenya is one.

Speaking during the Jamhuri Day celebrations at Kasarani Stadium, the Head of State emphasised the need to uphold the Constitution and reiterated that no one is above it.

"As the 4th President of Kenya, I will not tire of reminding you that we will have a 5th and even a 10th President but we shall never have a 2nd, 3rd or 4th Kenya.

"The pursuit of politics for politics sake must be a thing of the past. Pursuit of politics for economic liberation is our future," he stated.

Kenyatta also promised not to fail in his role as the Commander-in-chief stating that he had the responsibility of serving the nation.

He took time to condole with victims of road accidents that claimed several lives on Tuesday stating that correct measures would be put in place.

"I am remorseful about the accidents which have happened on our roads. Serious measures will be taken against anyone who violates traffic rules," he remarked.

In November, Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma drafted a Bill seeking the secession of all but seven of Kenya’s 47 counties to form the People’s Republic of Kenya.

Apart from Mt Kenya counties of Nyeri, Murang’a, Kiambu, Kirinyaga, Nyandarua, Embu, and Tharaka-Nithi, Mr Kaluma wants alL other 40 to break away from Kenya, alleging that they have been continually discriminated upon by successive governments.

Kaluma argues that President Kenyatta’s government has starved devolution of the growth it needs and that it has retained most of the funds in Nairobi.

“The objective of the Bill is to amend the Constitution to split to allow for the creation of a new state to give effect to the aspirations of the people of Kenya,” states Mr Kaluma in the Bill.
