Sonko Explains Why He Referred to Margaret Kenyatta as Mama Ngina Kenyatta in His Speech

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko on Tuesday made a mistake in his address during the Jamhuri Day celebrations at Kasarani Stadium.

The Governor wrongly saluted President Uhuru Kenyatta's referred to First Lady Margaret Kenyatta as Mama Ngina Kenyatta who is the President's mother.

Mama Ngina Kenyatta was Kenya's former First Lady and Uhuru's daughter is named after her.

Netizens took notice of the mistake after he posted his speech on his social media platforms.

Some of the social media users blamed Sonko's speech writers calling them out for embarassing the Governor.

Others wondered why he did not edit the mistake before putting up the speech on social media.

In his defence, Sonko mischievously explained, through his reply on Facebook, where he stated that he was only refering to the First Lady but decided to use Mama Ngina since she is the mother of Uhuru's daughter.

Sonko has severally been trolled for his lack of fluency in English and on various occasions struggled to communicate using the Queen's language.

He recently took to social media making fun of his spoken English as he commented that Former Ugandan President Idi Amin spoke better than Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu and himself.

During the campaigns for the August 8 elections, his opponents - Dr Evans Kidero and Miguna Miguna- used his lack of prowess in communication to discredit him.

However, Sonko braved the sustained attacks on his level of education and emerged the winner after he teamed up with Polycarp Igathe as his deputy.
