Free Matatu Rides for People Leaving Nairobi- Gov Sonko Announces

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko on Saturday announced that he would offer free transport to everyone leaving Nairobi to watch the national team play in the CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup finals in Machakos.

Through his social media account, the governor pledged to supply free transport to football fans to support the national team Harambee Stars as they face off against Zanzibar at Machakos stadium on Sunday.

"Free transport to and from Machakos. If you want to go cheer our national soccer team "The Harambee Stars" as they play Zanzibar in the CECAFA finals, be at shell petrol station Nyayo stadium Mombasa road at 1 pm," he posted.

Furthermore, The Ministry of Sports announced that the Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua ordered free entry for everyone intending to watch the match. 

"Ministry of Sports is at Machakos Stadium for updates of #CecafaKE2017 finals where Harambee Stars play Zanzibar at 3 pm that will be preceded by a match between Uganda & Burundi in the 3rd place playoff at 1 pm. Machakos County Governor orders for free entry," the Ministry tweeted on Sunday.

As the National team gears up to take on Zanzibar at Machakos, the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) promised each member of the 37-man Harambee Stars technical bench Sh180,000 if they win the match.

FKF chief Nick Mwendwa added that half of  Sh3 Million cash prize would go to the national team.

He assured that the Nairobi and Machakos Governors pledged to award the boys Sh1 Million each and Sh3 Million from federation partners SportPesa.

“We have already paid them all the allowances up until the game against Burundi on Thursday. We gave the team Sh500,000 for winning their semi-final and for the group stages, each player earned Sh50,000. It is now up to them to do their bit on the pitch,” Mr Mwendwa stated.

Earlier in the week, Kenya beat Burundi 1-0 in the semifinals while Zanzibar beat Uganda 2-1 to face off in the finals.
