2 Children Burnt to Death in Kisumu

Two children were on Friday killed in a night fire in Kisumu County.

Confirming the incident, Kisumu Town Senior Chief Location Willis Onyona, stated that the minors aged 5 and 6 years were burnt to death after a fire broke out in their house in Lower Milimani area.

He explained that the inferno started at 9:30 pm when the two siblings were asleep.

Mr Onyona further explained that the parents of the children were sleeping in a separate house when the fire broke out.

Initial investigations suggest that the incident happened because of an electric fault as a result of illegal power connection to the house.

The Chief added that the county fire brigade team was able to put out the fire and Kenya Power officials had also visited the scene to investigate on the cause of the fire.

The bodies of the children were taken to Jaramogi Oginga Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary.

Earlier on Thursday, five children were killed after a grenade they were playing with exploded in Mandera County.

The children aged between 12 and 16 years were playing with the grenade they had found in a grazing field when it detonated.

Banisa Sub-County Deputy County Commissioner Mathias Chisambo confirmed the incident stating that the schoolchildren found the device on Wednesday and played with it unknowingly.

"They picked up the device on Wednesday and played with it until it exploded on Thursday evening," Mr Chisambo stated.

Kiliweheri MCA Bashir Ibrahim Ali told reporters that the grenade could have been left by the British during the colonial era.
