Court Orders Ranguma to Pay Governor Nyong’o Sh5 Million

Kisumu High Court Judge David Majanja on Wednesday ordered former Kisumu Governor Jack Ranguma to pay Professor Anyang Nyong'o Sh5 Million.

This ruling was made after the judge dismissed an election petition filed by Mr Ranguma challenging the election of Prof Nyong’o.

Judge Majanja stated that the former Governor failed to provide enough evidence to substantiate claims of ballot stuffing.

He described the allegations as vague, embarrassing and founded on malice and propaganda stating that there was no proof of interference with the electoral process.

In November, the court dismissed Ranguma’s application where he had sought scrutiny and a vote recount, alleging that the election was marred by irregularities.

A witness testifying in support of Ranguma claimed that he had accessed the servers through an employee of the IEBC.

The court also heard that the governor results were announced without the outcome from five polling stations in Kisumu East constituency.

However, Majanja stated that the five stations didn’t have any significant change in the outcome of the election.

Other issues raised during the hearing included intimidation, violence, advocacy of six-piece-suit voting in the polling stations and favouring of agents from particular parties.

However, Prof Nyong’o, through his lawyer Siaya Senator James Orengo, argued that election was conducted within the law.
