Roselyn Akombe Lands New Role at UN

Former Commissioner at the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), Roselyn Akombe, has reportedly been promoted to a senior position at the United Nations (UN).

Opposition Leader Raila Odinga's Advisor, Salim Lone, who is also the Communications Director at United Nations Headquarters, divulged the news on his Twitter handle stating that Akombe had got a promotion to a senior rank at the department of political affairs.

Mr Lone explained that the Kenyan Mission to the UN opposed the move but the organisation still promoted the former commissioner.

According to the Communications Director, the position will guarantee Akombe security from the global body.

"Despite "almost violent opposition" from the Kenya Mission (as UN insider put it), Roselyn Akombe just got a promotion to even more senior position in UN Dept of Political Affairs. UN promotions are rare," he stated.

Following the announcement, Kenyans posted their reactions on social media with some applauding her while some condemned the move.

The former IEBC commissioner resigned in October 2017 just a week to the repeat presidential election and fled Kenya for the Newyork, where she took her former job.

In her resignation letter, Akombe noted that the electoral agency as was then, could not meet the basic expectations of a free, fair and credible election.

"We need the Commission to be courageous and speak out, that this election as planned cannot meet the basic expectations of a CREDIBLE election. Not when the staff is getting last minute instructions on changes in technology and electronic transmission of results," her letter read in part.

She claimed that her resignation was partly based on threats to her life and that of her family.

"My decision to leave the IEBC will disappoint some of you, but it is not for lack of trying. I have tried the best I could do given the circumstances. Sometimes, you walk away, especially when potentially lives are at stake," Akombe explained.
