IEBC Commissioner Roselyn Akombe Explains Why She Fled Kenya

Former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Commissioner Roselyn Akombe has given her reasons for fleeing to New York following her resignation from the polls body.

Akombe divulged that she and her family had been threatened, and cited the murder of former IEBC Head of ICT Chris Msando nine days to the August 8th election.

In an interview with KTN,  Akombe stated: "We live in this country. We know very well that we had our own staff brutally murdered nine days to the election, we have not had any explanation. So when somebody says they fear for their life after threats that have been received that are similar to those I had seen on the phone of Chris Msando, I have no reason to feel safe."

She also spoke on threats to her brother's life which she had previously raised adding that she did not expect to be received with a 'red carpet' when she comes back.

Dr Akombe sent out a letter announcing her resignation from the commission on Tuesday, stating that the October 26th election as currently planned could not meet the threshold of a credible poll.

She revealed that officials of the Commission have been compromised, noting that issues were not being decided on merit.

She further explained that officials were coming into meetings with hardline party positions that they would support regardless of their implications.

Dr Akombe also stated that the current stalemate was a political one and could not be fixed by the electoral body.

She announced her resignation and move to New York though she was scheduled to go to Dubai to supervise the printing of ballot papers by Al Ghurair Printing and Publishing.
