Police Vehicle Runs Over and Kills 1-year-old Child

A police vehicle ran over and killed a 1-year-old child in Bondo, Siaya County.

It is alleged that the child, Alphonse Onditi, was knocked down by a vehicle belonging to the Administration Police as he was playing on Wednesday.

According to eyewitnesses, baby Alphonse, whose mother runs an M-PESA shop at the entrance of the area Deputy County Commissioner's office was playing at the gate when he was knocked down.

"The boy was running to pick a box which he was playing with when the vehicle ran over him," an eyewitness was quoted by the Standard.

Siaya county Police Coordinator Patrick Lumumba Ombura confirmed the incident and revealed that the body had been taken to Bondo sub-county hospital mortuary.

Mr Lumumba further stated that the police officer who was driving the vehicle was released on bond and the vehicle had been towed to Bondo police station.

"We have already launched investigations into what could have happened," he reiterated.

Elsewhere, an 11-year-old boy committed suicide on Thursday after his request to be transferred to a different school failed.

Sources claim that the boy from Ongata Rongai wanted a transfer from a public school to a private one.

Reports indicate that after the mother left for the shop, the first born in a family of three, took a rope and hanged himself in the living room. 

Ongata Rongai OCPD Silas Rigera stated that investigations into the incident were ongoing as the mother revealed that there was no quarrel between the deceased and her.
