DP Ruto's Promise to Lang'ata Fire Victims

Deputy President William Ruto on Monday promised that the government would spend Sh70 Million to help residents who lost their homes during the Sunday night inferno in Nairobi's Southlands area.

While visiting Kijiji residents after the tragic inferno that has so far claimed four lives, the DP assured the residents of the government's support to rebuild their homes.

“What happened last night is very unfortunate. It was bad luck. But we now must seek a solution to water scarcity and ensure that people are able to rebuild their houses.

"The NYS will aid the reconstruction of houses, establish access roads, improve drainage and facilitate a return to normalcy. Rapid response and preparedness are a must during emergencies to avoid loss of lives and property.” he conveyed.

Earlier on Monday, Nairobi County Deputy Director for Fire Rescue, Brian Kisali, was sent on compulsory leave over poor response to last night’s fire in Lang’ata.

Kisali, who is in charge of fire and rescue services, received the leave notice signed from acting county secretary Leboo ole Morintant.

"You are instructed to prepare a handing over report to the country secretary by today," Morintant stated in the letter copied to Governor Mike Sonko.

The fire broke out at around 8 pm and left hundreds of families homeless.

According to the National Disaster Management Unit (NDMU), about 6,000 people were left homeless following the incident.

During the rescue operation, four fire engines ran out of water and left the scene.

“There’s no one who can contain the fire, and helpless residents have been left to watch as the inferno brings down houses.

Firefighters left the scene when the engines ran out of water,” stated one of the residents.
