Court Awards Dennis Itumbi Sh5 Million

The Court on Tuesday awarded Director Digital, Innovations & Diaspora Communications, Dennis Itumbi, Sh5 Million over illegal detention during the hearing of the International Criminal Court (ICC) cases against President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy President William Ruto.

Justice Joseph Onguto awarded the Senior State House Director the money as compensation for unlawful detention over alleged hacking of the ICC website in 2012.

Itumbi had sued the Government over his arrest and detention without trial over claims of accessing the hague-based court prosecution office email.

He filed the petition against Attorney General Githu Muigai, former Director of Public Prosecution Keriako Tobiko and Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinett.

In his suit papers filed before the Constitutional and Human Rights Division of the High Court, he claimed that his arrest was influenced by his close relations to the President, who was then facing charges of crimes against humanity at the ICC.

Itumbi demanded Sh50 Million as damages for the violation of his constitutional rights back then.

In the submission, he also demanded court protection from further prosecution and arrest about the issues.

Despite the termination of the ICC cases against the duo, he claimed that he is still being targeted by the investigators.

Former ICC Prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo had alleged that his email account was hacked and key witnesses against Mr Kenyatta and DP Ruto were being threatened.
