Maendeleo Chap Chap Launches Battle Against People's Assemblies

Maendeleo Chap Chap (MCC), the party led by Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua, has filed a lawsuit challenging the establishment of People's Assemblies by the Opposition.

Machakos is among 16 counties that passed the National Super Alliance (NASA)-sponsored People's Assembly motion.

Through lawyer Alfred Nyamu, Mutua maintained that the assemblies had no legal basis, describing them as unconstitutional.

“The purported establishment of People’s Assemblies is contrary to Article 2 of the Constitution,” the petition read in part.

NASA Chief Strategist, David Ndii, asserted that county assemblies would not be involved in the People's Assemblies, noting that it would be a 'people-driven process' and that the motions were only meant to affirm the will of the people.

After NASA leader Raila Odinga took the oath as 'People's President' on January 30, it has since emerged that an executive organ known as the National People's Constituent Assembly (NPCA) will be named in 10 days.

The NPCA will be the Opposition's top decision-making organ, with Odinga as its head.

The coalition plans on holding a People's Convention in February and is clamoring for a fresh presidential election in August.

“This will be done during our national convention at the end of this month...Our goal is to see the people’s assembly process culminate in a presidential election under a new electoral regime by August this year,” noted Ndii on Wednesday.

The coalition also revealed that the resolutions of the national convention would be validated by the people through a referendum.
