Raila Announces New Election Date After Taking Oath

A week after taking oath as the People's President, National Super Alliance (NASA) leader Raila Odinga has announced that the Opposition plans to hold elections in August 2018.

In an interview with BBC, he also stated that President Uhuru Kenyatta is not legitimate arguing that during the repeat Presidential election on Oct 26, there was lower voter turn out in most polling stations.

"We want another election, according to our timetable, by August this year we will have an election," he conveyed.

During the interview, Odinga also announced the plan to set up a people's convection which he noted would bring together various regional assemblies from various parts of the country.

He explained that during the convention, whose date he stated will be announced later; the assemblies would deliberate on the key resolutions and how they are going to be handled.

The six issues to be discussed include; reforms of police boss, electoral justice, independence of the judiciary, changes of police boss, restructuring and restrengthening of devolution, restructuring of executive power and ethnic inclusion.

"The people's convention will deliberate on the resolutions emanating from the people's assembly on how they want these six matters handled," he stated

He further clarified that the formation of People's Assembly is not against the law arguing: "We invoked provisions of article 1 of the Constitution, now setting up people's convention, then the convention will deliberate on decisions coming from the regional assemblies."

Odinga, also refuted the narrative that he would kick President Kenyatta out of power by leading a march of People's convention to State House.

"We will not go to remove Kenyatta from State House, he can sit comfortably, we will know how to remove him," he stated.
