Police officers in Kisumu County apprehended five suspects on Monday, July 28, who are believed to be behind a string of criminal activities within the city.
Acting on a tip-off, officers from Kasagam Police Station in Kisumu raided a suspected gang hideout along the banks of the Auji River, near the Daraja Mbili area in Manyatta 'B' Sub-Location.
According to a police report, the five suspects are believed to have been involved in various crimes, including robbery with violence, within the Nyamasaria Estate.
During the operation, the officers searched the suspects' houses and recovered a Honda motorcycle, three machetes, a knife, and a toy gun.
Following the recovery, the suspects were placed in custody at Kasagam Police Station, pending processing and arraignment in court.
While commenting on the matter shortly after the arrest, the police commended members of the public for their cooperation and contribution to the impromptu operation.
"The Service remains committed to its mission of providing effective, people-centric, and accountable policing services for a safe and prosperous society," said the police.
The arrest follows a wave of insecurity within the city, particularly in the outskirts, which has left residents living in fear and demanding urgent action from security agencies.
The latest victim of the insecurity in the area is a Mediamax journalist who is still receiving treatment at the Aga Khan Hospital after being attacked by armed robbers at his home in Nyamasaria.
According to reports, the journalist was attacked on Sunday, July 26, at around 2 a.m. by a gang of about ten people, five of whom entered his compound and broke into his house.
In the melee, the victim sustained deep knife cuts on his limbs and head injuries caused by a blunt object. "These knife marks are from me trying to protect my head and chest," the journalist revealed.
He stated that the attackers used iron bars to break the doors before storming into the house. According to him, once they gained access, the robbers beat him and his uncle before stealing property.
