Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi and his Mombasa counterpart Hassan Joho differed over calls for coastal leaders to break away from ODM.
ODM MPs from Kilifi County criticised NASA’s leadership claiming Coast was sidelined in sharing of parliamentary posts and called for coastal leaders to form their own party.
According to the leaders, actions by the two coalitions showed it’s time for Coast to establish its own political party to boost their bargaining power.
However, aides close to Joho stated that he was not keen on the idea of a new party and instead wanted to rally Coastal leaders to remain in ODM where he is the deputy party leader.

Mombasa Deputy Governor William Kingi stated: “We have not discussed the formation of a party. But I can state that in ODM we are well placed. Joho is the deputy party leader.”
The Mombasa Deputy Governor also stated that his boss was comfortable in ODM and will support any idea that will lead to the development the region.
Dr Kingi further argued that Joho had cultivated his political image within ODM and was keen to battle for the presidential ticket in 2022 maintaining that ODM was the best fit for the governors' ambition.
In Kilifi, however, Governor Kingi, MPs Aisha Jumwa (Malindi) and Owen Baya (Kilifi South) affirmed that Coastal leaders will form a party and field a presidential candidate in 2022.
“We’ll build our own house with enough bedrooms to accommodate all of us. Borrowing from others has brought us many problems. In 2022, we’ll not join any party,” the Kilifi governor stated.

However, the Kilifi leaders did not clarify if the proposed party will propagate the secessionist agenda initiated by Kingi and Joho.
