How Kenyan Police Thwarted Plan to Kill Queen Elizabeth

Kenyan police have been praised for their swift action in nabbing a terror suspect who was planning to assassinate Queen Elizabeth II.

Earlier this week, a UK court learnt that Kenya's intelligence service closely monitored messages sent by London delivery driver Aweys Shikhey, a 38-year-old Dutch national, who attempted to join terror group Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, a Jihadist movement in Iraq and Syria.

It emerged that Shikhey was in constant communication with Abdirahman Idrissa Hassan, a Somalia national, and they shared a series of messages that suggested they intended to kill the Queen and Mr Cameron.

During the hearing, Prosecutor Barnaby Jameson read out some of the messages where Hassan tells Shikhey: "May God bestow you in killing David Cameron and the old woman Elizabeth."

Hassan further enquires: “I want to ask you... can you buy bullets in the UK?” to which the defendant suggests smuggling is the only way to get them.

He further suggests that it would be better to acquire an AK-47, M16 and BKM for their mission to be successful.

The messages were mostly sent via Threema and Telegram and Shikhey was arrested on May 23, 2017, as he prepared to board a flight to Turkey.

He was found in possession of a number of mobile phones and had taken a selfie at the airport to disguise himself as a tourist

Hassan was arrested in Kenya for terrorism-related offences in September 2016.

Commander Dean Haydon, head of the London metropolitan counterterrorism unit, hailed the work of Kenyan detectives saying they stopped Shikhey from joining ISIS.

“Thanks to the information we received from the Kenyan authorities and the good work here by my detectives thereafter, we have been able to uncover his attempts and stop him from joining Daesh and committing terrorist acts over there.
