Police Open Fire to Disperse ODM Supporters Outside Mombasa High Court

Police on Friday opened fire outside Mombasa High Court to disperse Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party supporters shortly after the election of Nyali Member of Parliament (MP) Mohamed Ali "Jicho Pevu" was upheld.

The ODM supporters had gathered outside the High Court protesting the ruling and the loss of their preferred candidate Said Abdalla, Governor Hassan Joho's cousin.

Police also fired teargas at the Opposition supporters who caused a fracas as Mohamed's enthusiasts celebrated the win.

Mr Abdalla and the Nyali MP turned enemies soon after the ODM party primaries ahead of the August 2017 General Election.

MP Ali claimed that the Governor and his cousin had colluded to push him out of the race and had gone further to issue death threats to intimidate him.

Soon after Friday's ruling by Justice Lydia Achode, MP Ali hit out at Governor Joho stating that he only fears God and not men.

"You have been trying to fight me and to finish my political career but God has not let that happen.

"Joho is going around claiming he wants to be the next President of Kenya but he will not succeed in doing so," the MP condemned.

Chaos at the court erupted as members of the Orange party attended a strategy meeting at their famed Orange House in Nairobi.

Governor Joho, the party's deputy leader, attended the function where he championed the supremacy of the Opposition party in a call that seemed to marginalise other affiliate parties within the National Super Alliance (NASA).
