New Scam Used at Cyber Cafe to Steal Kenyans' Details

There is a new scam being used to defraud Kenyans at cyber cafes when their documents are copied and used to take loans.

Chief Executive Officer of Boresha Savings and Credit Cooperative Society, Musa Chebor, raised the alarm over increased incidences of fraudsters using teachers documents to get loans.

While addressing teachers during the Sacco's educational meeting in Marigat town, Baringo South Sub-County, he stated: "They keep reporting to us that unscrupulous individuals access their accounts and borrow loans without their awareness.”

“Once you finish downloading and printing your documents in cybercafes, order the computer attendants to delete all of them so they are not copied by criminals," he advised.

He further stated that two suspected fraudsters had been arrested in Uasin Gishu County while trying to steal money from the members' accounts.

He explained that the suspects were trying to use IDs and payslips of members to get loans from the Sacco's Eldoret branch.

“Through tip-offs from the members of the public, police arrested the suspects - Maru Kerring and Zena Jeruto from Turbo and Ziwa respectively,” Chebor stated.

Earlier in January, the Government, through the National Intelligence Service (NIS), established a website that will be used to fight criminal activities by controlling cybercrimes as well as protect users.

Sources within the security department indicate that the website will have a section where Kenyans can provide information on any criminal activity to the security agencies.

Officers from the NIS, Kenya Defence Force, the Kenya Police, Administration Police will be deployed to crack down the virtual crimes.

According to a report by the Nation, the site, dubbed http://www.nc3.go.ke, will be officially opened in approximately two months.
