Deal With This Case and be Sacked - CS Fred Matiang'i Warns Chiefs

Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi on Tuesday warned Chiefs and Assistant chiefs against mediating in rape cases or else they will be sacked, arrested and prosecuted.

Speaking during an address to Wajir County leaders, members of public and senior security chiefs, he explained that such kind of arbitration by the administration officers are primitive and is an abuse to the victims of rape.

“Anywhere rape will happen in this country and you try to mediate, we will fire you and jail you, We will not allow our children to be treated this way,” he stated.

He clarified that the rapist must be punished according to the laws prescribed in the Constitution.

“We must pursue them to their hideouts and punish them as prescribed in the constitution. Rape is a crime.

“There’s no reason for that…we shall not negotiate on this. This nonsense must come to an end,” he directed.

The former Education CS issued this directive in reaction to an incident where a school girl in Wajir county was abducted and raped for three days.

One of the three suspects was arrested while his accomplices' whereabouts remain unknown.

Efforts by the elders to initiate dispute resolution system (maslaha) was unsuccessful as the residents protested the move and called on the authorities to ensure justice for the rape victim.

In what appeared to be an address to rapists, CS Matiang'i stated: “Why can’t you ask wazee to help you get a wife. Let us give each of our children an opportunity to grow.”
