Lands CS Farida Karoney Angers MPs for Failing to Appear Before Parliament Committee

Lands Cabinet Secretary, Farida Karoney, has angered Members of Parliament following her decision to snub appearing before the Lands committee.

Karoney, who failed to appear before the Lands Committee of the National Assembly, opted to send the Ministry's Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) Mr Gideon Mung'aro, a move that annoyed the members.

“How can a Cabinet Secretary fail to appear before a committee of parliament for the second time? Statehouse has crawled this committee,” Makadara MP George Aladwa, who is a member of the committee, expressed.

The Lands committee chaired by Kitui South MP Dr Rachael Nyamai had summoned Ms Karoney over the Physical Planning bill, which is under consideration.

According to the MPs, this was the second time in a row where Ms Karoney ignored invitations, a decision that displeased committee members.

Naivasha MP Jane Kihara asked Mr Mung'aro why the CS had not taken the need to present herself seriously.

Reports by Nation indicate that the CAS had a hard time trying to calm the legislators as he tried to explain the absence of the CS.

Following Karoney's actions, the lawmakers sent a stern warning to Cabinet Secretaries who may in future fail to honour invitations to appear before committees of parliament.

They asserted that if the incident happens again, the CSs risk facing severe actions among them censure motions.

Equally, Administration and National Security Committee members were disappointed as Cabinet Secretary for Public Service, Youth and Gender Affairs, Margaret Kobia, also snubbed a similar invitation.

Prof Kobia, like Ms Karoney, sent her CAS Rachael Shebesh
