Babu Owino Calls for Demonstrations Over Killing of Meru University Student Leader Evans Njoroge

Embakasi East Member of Parliament (MP), Babu Owino, has asked students from universities across the country to protest the killing of Meru University of Science and Technology Student Association Secretary-General Evans Njoroge.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, the former University of Nairobi student leader expressed his dismay following the fateful event on Tuesday where a police officer allegedly shot the student leader dead at a close range.

According to Babu, the students' fraternity would hold demonstrations until the culprit is brought to book.

"The police killing is unacceptable and the government must ensure justice for the slain comrade," Babu stated.

The MP added: "It is either they (police) bring the culprit to book, or they surrender him and let the students determine his fate."

His remarks add to the growing voice of condemnation following the incident attributed to members of the anti-riot police unit that allegedly saw a bullet lodged in Njoroge's head.

Earlier on, the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) issued a statement calling for the dismissal of the Meru University Vice-Chancellor.

UASU termed the police action as cruel, brutal, ruthless, uncivilized, uncouth, and quite unprofessional.

The lecturers' union called upon Education Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohammed to take action against the Meru VC Japheth Magambo.

Meru leaders had also separately asked Magambo to step aside to allow the government agencies to carry out investigations into the killing of the students' leader.
