7 Arrested as Protests Break Out at Kenyatta National Hospital

Three journalists were on Monday arrested at the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) moments after protests broke out over recent cases of negligence and mismanagement.

While it remains unclear why plainclothes police officers arrested the journalists, four students who were part of the demonstrations were also arrested.

A group of at least 30 students from the University of Nairobi's Kabete campus had walked from Uhuru Park to KNH in protest as they demanded an overhaul of the KNH Management.

They carried placards written "we do not condone ignorance. #Quacksout" and chanted "KNH Management Must go!".

The students were arrested outside the hospital's Accident and Emergency Wing before being taken to Kilimani Police Station.

KNH faced its latest scandal last week when surgeons performed brain surgery on the wrong patient.

The Ministry of Health responded by sending KNH CEO, Lily Koros, on compulsory leave.

"I apologise over patient mix-up at KNH, I have directed that KNH CEO be sent on compulsory leave until the probe is over," CS Sicily Kariuki stated.

The surgeon involved was also suspended, a move that did not augur well with registrars at the hospital.

Over 700 registrars boycotted work on Monday in solidarity with the suspended surgeon, as they maintained that the error was not his fault.

According to them, nurses who prepared the patient for the surgery were at fault for wrong labelling.
