Nandi Governor Stephen Sang Reinstates 1000 Employees After 3 Commit Suicide

Nandi Governor Stephen Sang on Wednesday announced that 1,000 casual workers sacked in October 2017 would get their jobs back and sign new contracts with the county administration.

Three suicides reported over the past few months are said to have pushed Governor Sang to arrive at the decision.

"The Executive Committee is now in agreement that all workers who had been sent home should be reinstated. They will, therefore, sign new contracts," the Governor announced.

He further explained that the circumstances leading to their dismissal were being resolved by a disciplinary committee.

"Several senior county officers who were engaged in the unlawful engagement of casual workers are currently facing the disciplinary process. County workers should not be punished for other people's mistakes," Governor Sang stated.

At the time of dismissal, Senator Samson Cherargei accused the Governor of laying off workers on claims that they were loyalists to his predecessor.

"Workers were victimised and termed loyalists of former Governor Cleopas Lagat and dismissed or transferred irregularly," the Senator accused.

A procurement officer, Mr Kevin Kemboi, a worker Shadrach Biwott and a third unidentified worker ended their lives following the Governor's action leaving behind suicide notes to explain their drastic acts.

The procurement officer was under investigation for misappropriation of funds. He, however, hang himself leaving a note outlining that his seniors had framed him by forging his signature in suspicious cheques.

Mr Biwott took poison and in a note, explained that he had been driven to death because he could not take care of his family.
