Esther Passaris Reveals How Government is Frustrating Women in NASA

Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris claims that the government is frustrating women leaders affiliated to the National Super Alliance (NASA).

According to Passaris, the government has denied NASA women accreditation hence denying them an opportunity to attend the 62nd session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW62) in New York.

"The women of Opposition were not accredited, the women of government were accredited," Passaris stated.

This is despite the women legislators being allocated air tickets and per diems to cater for their stay during the conference.

Passaris castigated the government over what she termed a "waste of resources" since, without the accreditation, they would be denied access to the conference facility.

The legislator indicated that on her part, she had received accreditation to attend the conference although Parliament was yet to approve her travel.

She further elaborated that attending CSW62 would provide a great learning opportunity for the women as they would get great insight on women empowerment and gender equality.

Passaris also revealed that plans were underway to ensure the election of more women leaders come 2022 by offering support and providing mentorship and financing.

A similar remark had been raised on Wednesday by Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru indicating that they were targeting to have 13 women governors in the next General Election.

Speaking during the launch of a report titled "The Journey of Women Candidates in the 2017 General Elections", Passaris indicated that the number of women in elective political positions was extremely low considering that women make 52 percent of the Kenyan population.
