Sonko Told to Appoint a Woman as His Deputy After Supreme Court Ruling

Nairobi Governor, Mike Sonko, on Sunday was advised to appoint a woman as his Deputy Governor.

Speaking to KTN News, a women lobby group called Nairobi Women Caucus, stated that following the Friday court ruling that granted Governor's powers to appoint their deputies, Sonko should consider changing the norm by appointing a woman.

The group's chairperson Dinah Agai noted:" We are aware that our well able Governor, has a history of working with women in socio-economic issues that develop the region."

She, further, exclaimed that there are many women who have relevant qualifications to hold such offices.

Ms Agai added that Sonko ought to appoint a woman as his way of rewarding women who have over time supported him and his agenda of developing Nairobi.

"Appointment of a woman in that seat will incorporate gender diversity, improve collaborations, cultivate innovation, build stronger leadership in the county as well as create a much more inclusive seat," Agai highlighted.

She also noted that Sonko's appointment will set the right precedence in bridging the gender gap in the County.

Sonko is yet to appoint a deputy governor following the resignation of Polycarp Igathe in January.

Until Friday, the constitution did not envisage a vacancy upon death, impeachment, resignation or Deputy Governor's assumption into the Governor's office.

Supreme Court ruled that, in the event the seat is vacant, the Governor has 14 days to nominate a person to the office after which the County Assembly, within 60 days, will vote to either reject or allow the individual to assume office.
