Moses Kuria Pays Sh250,000 Bail to Free Ikamba Song Musician

Gatundu South Member of Parliament Moses Kuria has paid bail worth Sh250,000 securing the release of 'Ikamba' song musician John Gichiri.

On Tuesday, the Gatundu South lawmaker paid the bail money after the court reviewed its earlier terms of Sh700,000.

Kuria maintained that his lawyers will move to the High Court in a bid to get anticipatory bail for two other artists.

The lawmaker had assured Kiambu people that he would help secure the release of the Ikamba singer and even offered to pay the Sh700,000 if the courts did not reduce the bail.

He stated that he had directed his lawyer to start the bail process so that Gichiri, who is held at Industrial Area Remand Prison, is freed since the artist was unable to raise the cash bail after being charged with three counts of ethnic contempt.

Nairobi Chief Magistrate Francis Andanyi had directed that Gichiri's trial start on April 19, 2018.

The outlawed Ikamba song became a hit after the disputed charcoal ban trade in Kitui which led to a war of words between Kiambu's Governor Ferdinand Waititu and Charity Ngilu when a lorry transporting charcoal was burnt by irate youth.

The lyrics of the song mocked the Kamba community by telling them they will "eat dogs and wild birds due to starvation after the mango season is over".

National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) boss Francis Ole Kaparo added his voice to the matter noting that the content of the song was under investigation.

Additionally, KFCB boss Ezekiel Mutua rebuked the song banning its sale and distribution through a broadcast.
