Speaker Justin Muturi's Warning to ODM MPs after Unity Pact

National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi on Monday warned Members of Parliament from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party against forgetting their oversight role in the House.

Speaking in Naivasha, Muturi challenged the opposition legislators to continue with their role despite the new 'marriage' between Jubilee and ODM.

Muturi added that the move, which has received applause from across the political divide, provided a good working environment in Parliament.

“This is good development not only for Parliament but also for the country as we need peace for the country to forge forward,” he expressed.

He further noted: "This is a great opportunity for MPs to work for the public without acrimony as has been the case and we still recognize the role of the opposition in parliament."

On Friday, ODM Director of Strategy, Wafula Buke exclaimed that the Orange party had not given up its place as the official Opposition, rather, they had only found a way to gain power ahead of the next General Election.

"Jubilee dominance is evident and we know that. For the playing field to be leveled, one of the parties had to act normal and that is why Raila moved in to make the deal - to create a friendly Opposition," Mr Buke told Kenyans.co.ke

Buke further clarified that the pact made by the two leaders will only serve a purpose that they happened to share.

"The deal is not a merger of ODM and Jubilee it is only a unity of cooperation. These working relations will have an impact on 2022 politics.

"Some of the agenda that we share in common include national priorities of leading the nation, dealing with corruption, addressing past injustices and crime," the Director stated.
