James Orengo Reveals Why Raila Was Sworn-in Alone

Siaya Senator James Orengo on Tuesday gave a different account of why NASA leader Raila Odinga was sworn-in alone.

Speaking during an interview on Citizen TV, Orengo stated that Odinga went ahead with plans to be sworn-in after all the other co-principals backed out.

He also refuted talk that the opposition leader had asked his counterparts to switch off their phones, trashing allegations that he used a Nigerian number to communicate.

“Even as we were going to Uhuru Park, we still thought they would attend the event since they gave an indication that they would come.

“At the very last moment, when he realised they would not show up, Raila Odinga called them and said he would instead inform the audience that the three had sent their apologies, which he did," remarked the Senior Counsel.

He further divulged that he had all the call logs just in case anyone sought clarification on the matter.

“This thing about a Nigerian number is false. I can even show you the call logs, I have not erased them,” Orengo added.

Earlier in March, ANC Secretary General Barack Muluka accused Odinga of duping his colleagues during the swearing-in event.

According to Muluka, Raila had asked his counterparts to switch off their phones the morning of the event and assured that he would contact them via a private number from Nigeria to explain the itinerary of their agreed upon meeting.

The principals, however, did not follow this directive and instead kept their phones on and met up at one of their homes. They then contacted Raila from their home to follow up on their plan.

“Raila said ‘I’m marooned’ and he was asked, ‘Who has marooned you?’ And he said, ‘these people’.

“He was asked, marooned by police or the military? he quickly said ‘No. I will call you and tell you how we can meet’, then he left for Uhuru Park,” Mr Muluka revealed.
