MPs Kick Off Motion to Impeach Cabinet Secretary Sicily Kariuki

Health Cabinet Secretary Sicily Kariuki could be on her way out after a motion seeking to oust her was tabled in the National Assembly.

The motion, which was filed on Wednesday by Mandera North MP Bashir Abdullahi, has 170 signatures from lawmakers.

Abdullahi noted that he was pushing for CS Kariuki’s impeachment on grounds of gross misconduct and abuse of office.

The CS has been faulted by lawmakers for suspending Kenyatta National Hospital CEO Lily Koros over the brain surgery mix-up incident at the facility.

According to the MPs, suspending Koros was unprocedural of the Cabinet Secretary before commissioning an inquiry into the matter.

The MPs also alleged that during previous interaction with CS Kariuki, she has displayed arrogance and lack of respect for elected leaders.

The move comes barely a week after National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale requested the lawmakers spearheading impeachment of CS Kariuki to let the issue be handled by the Jubilee Parliamentary Group.

In a statement to newsrooms, Duale maintained that he had met the MPs and assured them that Parliament’s Health Committee would look into the matter.

“We have resolved with the members that the issue needs to be dealt with internally through the Jubilee Parliamentary Group structure," Duale stated.

"We resolved to give a chance to the departmental committee on Health chaired by Hon Sabina Chege to investigate the matter and table their report in the House for debate,” he added.
