4 Things to Watch Out for in Uhuru's State of the Nation Address

It has been announced that President Uhuru Kenyatta will deliver this year's State of The Nation address at Parliament buildings on Thursday next week.

Kenyans across the country will be keenly following the event to see what the President will have to say on a number of key issues that have dominated national discourse.

President Kenyatta will be expected to address the matter of national unity and possibly offer more details on his newfound partnership with National Super Alliance (NASA) leader Raila Odinga.

This comes following the surprise meeting of the two leaders at Harambee House after which they promised to work together to unite the nation and resolve long-standing issues.

Unlike President Kenyatta's 2016 address that saw him heckled and shouted down, opposition lawmakers will probably stay calm in light of the talks.

The massive public debt will also be expected to feature in the President's address.

Fears have been raised both by local and international players such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) that the debt levels could soon become unsustainable.

In February, Kenya raised Ksh202 Billion ($2 billion) in a new sovereign bond issue that was listed at the London Stock Exchange (LSE).

Kenyans will also want President Kenyatta to outline measures the government is taking to lower the cost of living.

In January, the cost of living rose to 4.83 percent from 4.50 percent in December, where it touched a 55-month high, driven by higher prices of food, electricity and fuel. Pundits predicted that the trend was set to continue into the early months of 2018.

Finally, it is expected that President Kenyatta will speak on his Big 4 agenda, especially as this is considered the government's blueprint for his second term in office.

Kenyans will want to know how he plans to deliver on his promises of universal healthcare, manufacturing jobs, affordable housing and food security.
