The Urgent Call Miguna Miguna Made Moments Before Deportation

A Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) official has revealed how Miguna Miguna made a frantic phone call moments before his deportation on Emirates flight EK722 from JKIA.

Speaking during a joint media presser organized by the KNCHR, the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) and the Media Council of Kenya, the official revealed that this call was abruptly interrupted and the phone switched off.

"Before I entered the car Miguna called me and told me; They are killing me. Please come quickly and inform everyone," Kamanda Mucheke narrated.

Kamanda who spent several hours with Miguna disclosed that he had been detained inside a toilet meant for the disabled people.

"I found Miguna in a toilet. Yes, it is a toilet and not a cell. The toilet has no shower and the sink has very hot water, so he could not shower in there," he stated.

KNCHR Chairperson Kagwiria Mbogori revealed that Miguna had already made up his mind before embarking the plane from Canada that he would not enter Kenya as a visitor and efforts by his lawyers to persuade him otherwise were futile.

Kamanda's presence at the airport was in compliance with a court directive that required KNCHR officials to be at the airport on Miguna's return to ensure smooth facilitation of his return.

Kagwiria indicated that the commission witnessed incidents where fundamental provisions of the constitution were violated including Miguna's human rights, attacking of journalists by police and the disregard of court orders by government officials.

Asked whether Miguna was possibly sedated, Kagwiria replied: "How was it that he was so compliant yesterday yet at 8:30 PM when our officers left to buy him dinner, he was adamant that he would not leave the country?

"How was he seated on seat 45J so peacefully, quietly and compliantly? Making no noise... (remember) this is Miguna," Kagwiria posed.
