New Unit Formed to Deal With Rogue Police Officers

A new unit has been formed within the police force that will deal with rogue law enforcement officers following a spike in their involvement in several cases.

At least 89 police officers have been arrested between October 2017 and March this year in connection with various crimes including gunrunning, murder, robbery, kidnapping, extortion, and drug trafficking among others.

The new unit known as the Crime Research Bureau (CRB) is reportedly already up and running and is located at Mazingira House, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Headquarters

10 professionals have already been recruited, vetted for integrity and deployed to the unit.

Among other things, the unit will be tasked with researching, updating and maintaining a database of all known criminals in Kenya.

It has also emerged that police officers could be involved in cases of livestock theft.

Recent cases currently being investigated seem to indicate that some of the cattle rustlers employ tactics that are usually the reserve of those with  paramilitary training, an unnamed senior police officer told The Nation.

Some of the officers are also on the spot for hiring out their firearms and uniforms to criminals who use them to terrorize innocent citizens, typically robbing and threatening to arrest them.

A team of detectives from Nairobi’s Starehe division recently intercepted such a consignment that was destined for Kainuk in Lodwar.

On March 17, a corporal and police constable were arrested at Kathelwa Administration Police camp, with the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) ordering that they be charged with murder.
