Justice George Odunga Leaves Milimani Law Courts for Machakos High Court

High Court Judge George Odunga of the Milimani Law Courts in Nairobi finally moved to the Machakos High Court on Wednesday.

Justice Odunga was transferred to the Machakos station in February by Chief Justice David Maraga. The notice outlined that the transfers would officially begin on April 4, 2018.

The Judicial Review Division judge made a name for himself after issuing unexpected rulings on high profile cases including a ruling on August 7, 2018, that declared Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) officials illegally in office.

The ruling would later be overturned by the Court of Appeal after the government challenged the ruling.

His last days at the Milimani station saw him hit headlines once again as he was tasked to rule on a case involving embattled lawyer Miguna Miguna.

Justice Roselyn Aburili had ordered the immediate release of Miguna from detention at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), an order that was ignored by security officials.

Judge Odunga went on to issue summonses for Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i, Inspector General Joseph Boinnet and Immigration Department head Gordon Kihalang'wa.

After the security chiefs ignored two summonses, Judge Odunga proceeded to condemn them on contempt of court charges and fined them Ksh200,000 each, deductible from their salaries.

The ruling has earned Justice Odunga and his fellow member of the bench gall from the Interior CS who labelled them "evil" during an appearance before the National Security and Administration parliamentary committee.

"There is a clique in the Judiciary that has been captured by the civil society and activist lawyers who want to embarrass the government.

"It is an evil clique of judicial officers who want to drag us by the collar through trial by the public court," the CS stated.
