Alleged Parliament Conman Wazir Chacha to Stay in Police Custody

A Nairobi court has been told that Wazir Chacha who is accused of running a scam that saw lawmakers lose huge sums of cash is fit to stand trial following a mental assesssment at the Mathare Hospital.

The Chief Magistrate at the Milimani Law Courts further ordered that Chacha remain in police custody pending the hearing of an application by the Prosecution to have him denied bond and bail terms.

The prosecution argued that Chacha is a flight risk and should therefore be denied bail.

He denied six counts including conspiracy to defraud, obtaining registration by false pretense and impersonation.

In a video that emerged last week, Chacha claimed that Murang'a Women Representative Sabina Chege was behind all his woes.

Chacha is alleged to have registered a mobile money account in Chege's name which he used to get money from legislators and other senior government officials.

Among those who reportedly fell victim to the scam are former Gem MP Jakoyo Midiwo, Speaker Justin Muturi and Cabinet Secretary Margaret Kobia.

Chege, however, denies having any contact with Chacha at any point.

In a radio interview with Hot 96 last week, she dared Chacha to release intimate videos allegedly in his possession of his escapades with various female lawmakers.

Media reports indicated that Chacha, a former Devolution Ministry employee, had gotten close to at least 13 MPs.
