Aden Duale Asks Somali Community to Lower Bride Price

National Assembly Majority leader Aden Duale has urged the Somali community living in Kenya to lower bride price.

The legislator was speaking in Eastleigh on Tuesday where he stated that lowering bride price will enable men to marry more wives and get more children thus increasing the number of votes during elections.

“When one approaches to wed a lady, he is asked for $10,000 (Ksh 1 million) worth of bride price. That is ridiculous, what are you buying, a Probox?

“By marrying more wives, we can be stronger and have a larger influence on Kenya’s scene as the Muslim community.

Tunataka watoto wengi ndio kura zikihesabiwa, zikue mingi kama mvua (We want more children so that when they count the votes, they are like rain…)" he remarked.

Duale was one of the guests during the Firi Festival- a one-day cultural festival and business expo organised by Eastleigh's business community to celebrate the cultural diversity of the area.

While responding to Kiambu Women Rep Gathoni Wamucomba calls for polygamy, the MP encouraged the Islam community to marry four or more wives.

“A while back the lady from Kiambu told men of the Gikuyu community to have more than one wife, but we as the Islam community have the religious go ahead so we should marry four or more wives and have many children”, he stated.

Mombasa Woman Rep Asha Hussein on Tuesday challenged President Uhuru Kenyatta and asked him to lead by example by marrying a second wife.

Speaking during a workshop on Affirmative Action in Mombasa, the lawmaker asked the President to have a second wife and take her to State House.

Asha maintained that a majority of the women were against the proposal, and since the president signed the Marriage Bill into law in 2014, "he should then lead in the implementation".

The Mombasa legislator stated: "Many women support the idea of legalising polygamy in the country but Uhuru should take the challenge by marrying a second wife and introduce her in the press for all of us to see."
