Larry Madowo Confirms Joining BBC as Business Editor

Outspoken journalist Larry Madowo on Wednesday confirmed that he will be joining British owned media BBC.

In a statement shared by the former NTV anchor, BBC confirmed that Madowo will be the Business Editor, a position that had been advertised.

The new job comes as a relief to Madowo, who allegedly had a frosty relationship with Nation Media Group’s management and editorial leadership forced him out.

Madowo cited lack of editorial independence at the media house calling out top brass at the media house for allegedly being compromised by the State.

His woes began after covering Raila Odinga’s ‘swearing in’ ceremony at Uhuru Park on January 30, defying a government directive to give the event a media blackout.

The journalist was forced to spend the night in the office alongside anchor Ken Mijungu and the then Managing editor Linus Kaikai to avoid arrest by law enforcement officers.

Madowo left his fan base confused about his next move after he edited his Twitter handle and removed any attachment with the NMG and the television station he worked for.

The move by Madowo to BBC to head the Business desk doesn't come as a surprise since he began his career as a business reporter in KTN.

He also became first-ever non-South African anchor to be based in CNBC Africa’s Johannesburg headquarters where he hosted live market shows Open Exchange, Power Lunch and Closing Bell.

Madowo also produced and presented the weekly show Eye on Kenya and hosted numerous CNBC Africa events and awards ceremonies.

The journalist also travelled to and reported from nearly 20 countries in 4 continents on such wide-ranging stories from manufacturing in China, Silicon Valley’s technology credentials in the US and tourism in Ghana.
