Mike Sonko Speaks on His Plan for 2022 Elections

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has addressed speculation that he is angling to become Deputy President in 2022 after previously stating that he would be a one-term governor.

While not entirely dismissing the notion that he wanted to be a running mate in the 2022 Presidential race, Sonko stated that he could even go for a Member of County Assembly (MCA) seat or become the Opposition Leader.

“It is not only being DP that is out there. I can also be MCA or leader of the Opposition. These are positions I have never held. It is just politics,” he noted.

The county boss further called for an end to the speculation as his focus was on transforming Nairobi.

“Saying that I want to be a one-term governor does not mean that I want to be deputy president or the president. Let me do my work and let it speak for me and only God knows what the future holds,” Sonko stated.

Sonko has been in the headlines in recent weeks after alleging that senior government officials were holding night meetings to plot how to block DP William Ruto's 2022 Presidential bid.

He specifically accused Interior Ministry PS Karanja Kibicho and one of President Uhuru Kenyatta's key campaign managers Nancy Gitau of being in on the plot along with two more unnamed officials.

Sonko further accused Kibicho of seeking to impose on him the person he should pick to become Deputy Governor.

"PS is a very junior official who does not have the right to threaten me. I was elected by the people of Nairobi but not by a PS. I won't allow intimidation just because you are PS of internal security. My deputy should come from the Kikuyu community but let me choose whom I want," an angry Sonko told Kameme FM.

Kibicho later rubbished the claims stating that Sonko had a problem with him over a decision barring Governors from flying the flag on their cars.

"We don't do night meetings and if we did, I would tell you. Nobody is trying to fight the DP but there is a cartel of people who always act like they are his protectors. I run the intelligence of this country and there are no such meetings,"  he maintained.
