President Uhuru Hasn't Received Resignation Letters of IEBC Commissioners - Manoah Esipisu

State House spokesperson Manoah Esipisu on Tuesday stated that President Uhuru Kenyatta was yet to receive the resignation letters of Consolata Maina, Margaret Mwachanya, and Paul Kurgat who quit the IEBC.

Esipisu further stated that the law will take its course as the Head of State is concerned with other serious issues affecting the country.

"President Kenyatta has not yet received the resignation letters of the 3 IEBC commissioners given that he is away in London.

"The law will take its course. The President is focusing on getting investments to the country and not IEBC," he stated.

The resignations leave only two commissioners — Abdi Yakub Guliye and Boya Molu — and chairman Wafula Chebukati to run the electoral body

The Head of State is supposed to announce a vacancy at the agency within seven days of receiving the commissioners’ resignation but he is not in the country.

The Public Service Commission will then have 14 days to publish the search for new commissioners, picked by a panel and approved by the president and MPs.

Kenyatta arrived in the United Kingdom on Monday evening for a five-day visit during which he will attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) and hold talks to market Kenya as a preferred investment destination.

He is scheduled to hold talks with Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and Prime Minister Theresa May.

The President is also expected to hold more bilateral talks with several Heads of State attending the CHOGM, a biennial meeting of leaders from the 53 countries that make up the Commonwealth of Nations.

This year’s summit, focused on promoting prosperity, safety, sustainability and fairness, brings together at least 5000 participants from government, business, and civil society.

Besides trade and diplomacy, security and regional development priorities are also part of President Kenyatta’s agenda during the five-day visit.
