Amina Mohammed Should Be Jailed - UASU

The Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) on Thursday moved to court seeking the imprisonment of Education CS Amina Mohamed.

The union claims that the CS and other officials disobeyed court orders to give them a counter-proposal as directed on March 16.

“She made public comments that no counter-proposal will be made until a job evaluation is done by her ministry,” read the court papers.

UASU further wants Prof. PWN Kanyari, Francis Aduol, Treasury CS Henry Rotich, the Attorney General Paul Kihara and Salaries and Remuneration Commission Secretary Anne Gitau held in contempt of court.

“Whereas the court order of 16th March 2018 was explicit that all parties were to submit themselves before the conciliator to fast-track the conciliation process, the interested parties have blatantly refused to submit themselves to the conciliation process,” argued the union.

Constantine Wasonga, the union's secretary-general also alleged that the chairman of the claimant - Kanyari - has declined to attend the conciliation process as ordered.

According to Education PS Japheth Ntiba, the lack of a substantive Salaries and Remuneration Commission report is the reason a counteroffer has yet to be made to the lecturers.

The ongoing lecturers' strike has paralysed learning in public institutions for almost two months leaving many students stranded.

The University of Nairobi (UoN), however, directed its students to continue attending class despite the strike.

In a statement on Wednesday, the University’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor Henry Mutoro noted that measures had been put in place to ensure learning resumes at the Institution in spite of the interruption by the striking staff.
