Wazir Chacha Freed by Court on Ksh1 Million Cash Bail

Benson Masubo alias Wazir Chacha was on Wednesday released on a Ksh1 million cash bail after he denied fraud charges in relation to extortion claims against Members of Parliament.

Chacha, who was charged with six counts, including conspiracy to defraud, obtaining registration by false pretense and intent to defraud, was released after spending nearly a month in jail.

He had earlier on denied the charges before Milimani Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi.

Chacha also faced charges of obtaining money by false pretense, attempting to obtain money by false pretense and impersonating a public officer.

He was further accused of impersonating Murang’a Woman representative Sabina Chege, charges which he denied before the chief magistrate.

The court heard that he had conspired to register a mobile number in the name of Sabina Chege, which he used to contact former Gem lawmaker Jakoyo Midiwo who gave him Ksh20,000.

Midiwo was listed as a witness alongside Chege and the prosecutor informed the court that the suspect attempted to obtain Ksh100,000 from the former MP.

The prosecution had affirmed that it will oppose bail application, arguing the suspect was a flight risk since he has no fixed abode, a report on Chacha’s mental status was also compiled.

Chacha was arrested on April 1 in Tanzania as he attempted to flee to the Democratic Republic of Congo.

MPs exposed the suspect after they sought police intervention after it emerged the suspect had conned several lawmakers and high-ranking government officials in a scam.
