Political analyst Prof Mutahi Ngunyi on Sunday explained that Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga's push for a referendum would cause a collapse the unity deal with President Uhuru Kenyatta.
In his weekly show the Fifth Estate, the professor and his team from the Fort Hall School of Government opined that Odinga's call for the formation of three-tier government spelt doom for the new-found unity.
"Raila is a serial betrayer and should not be trusted. I discern a disaster in this handshake. Raila's selfish motives to call for a referendum will finish the handshake and the result will be a disaster in my view," Prof Ngunyi stated.
The team added that a constitutional referendum was inevitable and it would happen because Raila called for one.

"All he needs is a million signatures which he can easily get. Even the handshake can't stop it," they conveyed.
Prof Ngunyi and the team stated that Raila's motive behind the referendum was the creation of the Executive Prime Minister's position.
"The creation of the Executive Prime Minister position is an evil scheme person where the one with the most number of MPs becomes Prime Minister and forms the government.
"Raila wants to create the position so as to defeat the tyranny of numbers," the team explained.
Earlier on Saturday, Raila insisted that there must be constitutional change to make devolution work adding that the peace pact with Uhuru was not imposed by foreign nations.
While delivering the keynote address during the devolution forum earlier in the week, the opposition boss proposed a new 3-tier system that borrows elements of the 2005 Bomas draft constitution but retains the current counties along with the national government.
"We need to bite the bullet and revisit the structure of devolution. The Bomas draft had 14 regions and the intention was to have units that were economically viable. It is time to look at how to recover this system.
