Date Set for President Uhuru Kenyatta to Deliver State of Nation Address

The date when President Uhuru Kenyatta will give details of the unity deal with Raila Odinga has been disclosed.

Via a briefing to newsrooms on Sunday, State House spokesperson Manoah Esipisu stated that Uhuru would deliver the first State of the Nation address of his second and last term as president on Wednesday, May 2.

"This address to the joint sitting of Parliament is in terms of measures the President has taken and the progress achieved in the realisation of national values; progress made in fulfilling Kenya’s international obligation; and the state of our nation’s security," the statement read in part.

Even though the statement was vague in detailing what the president would talk about, it was clear that the three issues he was set to address would touch on his deal with Odinga.

"A number of journalists have been asking what the President will say, but clearly we all have to wait to hear what the President will say.

"What we can say, though, is that the Constitution requires him to address the nation, through an appearance in Parliament, to speak to the three issues I have raised, and to share his views on the long-term shaping and reimagining of our country," Esipisu declared.

The annual address was for the first time since Uhuru became president in 2013  postponed this year.

He did not give the address in March as was expected due to the then standoff with Raila Odinga who had sworn himself in as the people's president in January.

However, during Kenneth Matiba's funeral service, President Uhuru stated that he would continue working with the opposition leader to build political bridges that ensure Kenyans continue enjoying peace and unity devoid of hate, division and ethnicity.

On his part, Odinga disclosed that he was determined to work with President Uhuru Kenyatta to bequeath the youth a better country.
